Ancestral Hall Architecture as Cultural Heritage Education: Preservation of Traditional Decorative Elements in Chinese Clan Buildings

Abstract

This study examines the architecture of ancestral halls as a form of cultural heritage learning by analyzing how this form aids in the passing of cultural information and identity outside the classroom. A qualitative interpretivist methodology was used to study the Chen Clan, Wang Family and Huizhou ancestral halls through a multiple case study design where architectural observation, visual analysis and thematic analysis were utilized. The results indicate that spatial organisation, ornament, and user interaction are effective as a group, whereby implicit and experiential learning is facilitated. Nevertheless, the practices of preservation tend to ignore intangible cultural meanings. The paper concludes by finding that ancestral halls were structured school systems. It suggests comprehensive conservation plans, better interpretive programs, incorporation of technology and involvement of communities to keep them educational and cultural
