Call for Papers – ETE – v. 2, n. 2 (2015) – University and Transitions to Democracy in Mediterranean Europe and Latin America (1970-1980)

The periods of political transition to democracy become historical moments in which a confluence of factors, circumstances and processes characterized by political, economic, social and cultural changes, such as to make possible the emergence of visions and educational projects radically different from those that were developed in previous eras. Within these processes, the University has played a leading role in key occasions, to free, modernize and democratize the institutions, structures, society and thought. These periods, therefore, offer an environment of exceptional importance for the study of transformations, breaks or continuities that occurred in the field of Higher Education and its influence on politics, culture and society.

The so-called third wave of transitions to democracy is a good example of this phenomenon and represents the primary object of study in the monograph now being proposed with the title: University and Transitions to Democracy in Mediterranean Europe and Latin America (1970-1980), edited by Dr. Sara González Gómez (University of the Balearic Islands, Spain / e-mail: [email protected]). Educational policy issues, phenomena of democratization within the universities, development of curricula, ideological debates in universities or trends in the forms of student mobilization are some of the topics of study, among many others, that may shed original information and interest on the theme of Higher Education during the third wave of transitions to democracy occurred in various countries of Mediterranean Europe and Latin America.
